세종대학교(총장 엄종화)는 미국 스탠퍼드대학교가 글로벌 학술 출판사 엘스비어(Elsevier)의 Scopus 데이터를 기반으로 발표한 ‘세계 최상위 2% 연구자 리스트’에서 비의대 종합 대학 중 국내 1위를 차지했다.
이번 리스트는 1960년부터 2024년까지의 논문 실적을 종합 평가한 ‘생애업적(career-long)’ 기준과 2024년 단일 연도 실적을 평가한 ‘한 해(single-year)’ 기준으로 나뉘며, 세종대는 생애업적 기준에서 총 41명의 연구자가 세계 최상위 2%에 이름을 올렸다. 이는 의대를 보유하지 않은 국내 종합 대학 중 가장 높은 수치다.
이번 순위는 엘스비어의 Scopus 인용 데이터로 산출됐다. 단순 인용 합계가 아니라, 스탠퍼드대 존 이오아니디스(John P. A. Ioannidis) 팀이 만든 복합 지표 ‘c-score’를 쓴다. c-score는 △총 인용 △h-index △공저 보정 hm-index △단독 저자·제1저자·교신저자 위치별 인용 등 여섯 가지 인용지표를 표준화해 합성한 것이다.
국내 대학의 연구 역량은 일반적으로 의대와 부속병원의 존재 여부에 크게 좌우된다. 이번 순위에서도 대부분의 상위권 대학이 의대와 대형병원 연구진의 방대한 논문·인용 실적에 힘입어 순위를 끌어올린 것으로 보인다.
이러한 구조 속에서 세종대의 성과는 더욱 주목받고 있다. 의대 없이도 40명 이상의 연구자가 세계적 영향력을 인정받은 것은, 세종대가 기초과학 및 공학 분야에서의 집중 투자와 연구 환경 개선을 통해 독자적인 연구 생태계를 구축했음을 보여준다.

Sejong University (President Eom Jong-hwa) has ranked No. 1 among comprehensive universities in Korea without a medical school in the “World’s Top 2% Scientists List” released by Stanford University based on Scopus data provided by Elsevier.
The list is divided into two categories: “career-long”, which evaluates research performance from 1960 to 2024, and “single-year”, which assesses performance for 2024 only. A total of 41 Sejong University researchers were listed in the career-long category — the highest number among all Korean comprehensive universities without a medical school.
The ranking is based on citation data from Scopus, using a composite citation indicator (c-score) developed by John P. A. Ioannidis and his team at Stanford. The c-score is calculated by standardizing and combining six key citation metrics: total citations, h-index, co-authorship–adjusted hm-index, citations to single-author papers, citations to single or first author papers, and citations to single, first, or last author papers. as single, first, or corresponding author.
In Korea, the research capacity of universities is generally influenced by whether they have medical schools and affiliated hospitals. In this year’s list, most of the top-ranking universities benefited from the extensive publication and citation output of their medical faculty and hospital research staff.
